Cadets at Ely

Ely has a small, dedicated group of sailing cadets (18 and under) and sailing families. Cadets are welcome to participate in all social & racing sailing sessions, including trophy races and one of the joys of sailing is that young and older can sail and compete alongside one another. We actively encourage cadets & their adults to come and give sailing a try.

Our cadets are friendly and approachable and always happy to give new sailors a helping hand.

Thursday evening sailing sessions (18:00) are particularly popular with cadets and these are a mix of coaching and informal racing, always with an experienced helm on hand to offer advice and guidance.

Youth Racing at Ely

Racing at Ely has a high number of youth sailors sailing a range of classes including Toppers, Lasers and Optimists. The racing is always fun and exciting, and experienced helms are happy to offer advice and coaching. Youngsters can very much compete against the adults as shown by the 2 of the 2024 trophy races being won by a cadet.

Ely has a strong history of supporting youth sailors to improve. Every year, a team of Ely cadets, take part in the Cambridgeshire Youth League, competing in five events held at five locations throughout the year. Over the past few years, several Ely sailors have won the overall season award, as well as successes at individual events and in 2024, Ely took home to overall team prize for the first time.
