Flag signals: the Newsletter of Ely Sailing Club October 2026

It seems no time at all since we were writing a newsletter about the sailing season begining and here we are with the sailing season ended... or thanks to Storm Austen and Storm Boelo, almost ended, with the postponement of the Halloween Bowl.

Thanks to everyone for making sure all the boats were tied down: we're glad to report that the only things that had shifted by Sunday afternoon were some of the buoys. The new plan is to hold the Halloween Bowl on Sunday 1st November, starting at 11am.

The weekend after, we'll have the Laying Up Supper on the 7th November and then on Sunday 8th, we'll de-rig the club boats, starting at 1pm, all help gratefully received. If you haven't got your ticket for the Laying Up Supper yet, you can book on the website

After that, there's the AGM on the 26th, for which you should have all received the calling notice: if you haven't seen it, please check your spam or junk email folders in case it's been mis-routed by your email provider. Nominations and proposals need to be sent to the Hon. Secretary by the 30th October.

Our amazing team of cadets went to the last Youth League event of the year at Hunts Sailing Club on the 10th October and came away with the Youth League Trophy! Well done to them and everyone who has helped, what a fantastic achievement!

Thanks also to Dave and Yvonne for a thoroughly enjoyable and closely contested quiz on the 16th.

Just because dinghy sailing is ending for the year doesn't mean everything stops though. The model yachts continue to sail, with sessions now twice a week on Saturdays and Tuesdays. There's one more Saturday morning session, before they move to Saturday afternoons from the 14th onwards. Contact Gil for more information and to join the What's App group.

Off the water, social events carry on, of course, on the first, third and fifth Friday evenings of the month, finishing with the special Christmas Social on the 18th December. And don't forget our traditional Christmas Lunch on Sunday 13th December: tickets are now available on the website.
