Ely SC on tour on the Norfolk Broads

A group of 15 Ely sailors have had a grand day out on the Norfolk Broads. The club hired 3 Rebel class boats from Hunters Yard. With moderate winds the staff at Hunters recommended a reef and storm jib on each boat. After a while of working out which bit of rope did what (Is that the gaff halyard or the lifting halyard? Dunno, try giving it a pull) we made our way out of Ludham and on to the Thurne, heading for Acle. The South Westerly meant we could keep close hauled for good stretches along the river, often creeping along the reed lined banks before feeling the need to put a tack in. Lunch and a swift pint was had at the Acle Bridge Inn before setting back along the Thurne, this time with the wind allowing a reach most of the way to the junction with the Bure. The moderate winds made for some great sailing, with the Rebels often passing the many motor cruisers. We took a short exploration of the River Bure getting as far as St Benets Abbey, at which point we were joined by an impressive gaff rigged wherry. Then another hour or so of sailing before negotiating the cabin cruisers practicing their skills at the entrance to the cut up to Ludham. All in all a great day out and fabulous experience. Thanks to Tamara, Catherine and Alan for all the organising.
